Ratings Announcement – Changes Effective January 8, 2018

News like this spreads quickly in our little community, so now is a good time to reach out to you, our membership, and let you know what’s happening!

As you know, the Men’s and Women’s Rating Committees operate separately; however, both agreed that it was time to take a hard look at our existing player ratings. This was mainly spurred by a recent action taken by Yankee Volleyball (our sister organization under NERVA who covers that rest of New England) which involved an exercise to move many players at the top end of their rating level into the next higher rating in order to achieve a better, more appropriate spread of ratings across the entire scale.

While that action did spur us to take an objective look at things, we want to be clear that we did NOT re-rate players just to have a better spread across the entire rating scale.

Accuracy was the main objective, and we agreed that in the past we may have been a bit too conservative with up-rate decisions. Reasons for hesitation ranged from concern over the players’ likelihood of being asked to play, to the unavoidable comparison to other similar players who remain at the lower rating, and everything in between. Reviewing everyone at the same time allowed us to put some of those concerns aside and truly judge the player based on their demonstrated skills. We leaned heavily on the rating worksheet; if the final number landed a player even 1 point into the next higher range, we agreed to an up-rate (where in the past we might have taken other things into consideration).

At the end of the day, the goal of these two committees is to provide a fair rating that represents a player’s ability to contribute to the success of a team, regardless of level or format. Why? Because competitive tournaments are fun!

Now, the info you really care about!

Ratings for 17 women and 11 men are being adjusted as indicated below, effective January 8, 2018 (so as not to impact teams forming for the Jan 7 tournament). These players were notified on Dec 20, 2017.
