Tournament FAQs

Why does MSVBA hold tournaments?

MSVBA’s tournaments are a dual fundraising venture between local volleyball clubs and MSVBA. Volleyball clubs provide a venue for MSVBA to conduct tournaments and in return receive a portion of the tournament entry fees.

How much could my volleyball club raise by hosting a tournament?

The actual amount that a club can raise varies depending on the number of teams that enter the tournament. The typical amount for a full 10 team tournament is $600 to $700.

How do I get my club on the tournament schedule?

Email the Tournament Coordinator at [email protected] for information.

Why are there different entry fees for different tournaments?

We have two different types of tournaments, friendship and sanctioned. Friendship tournaments are refereed by the players. Sanctioned tournaments are refereed by paid USAV certified referees. Sanctioned tournaments have a higher entry fee to pay the referees and not reduce the amount of money raised for the host volleyball club.

What are the different levels and formats for tournaments?

LEVELS
B- 33 Points
C++ 30 Points
C+ 27 Points
C 21 Points
C18 18 Points

FORMATS
Women’s – Straight gender womens
Men’s – Straight gender men’s (women may participate and rating is adjusted per table in MSVBA rules)
Coed – 3 Women, 3 Men alternating rotation played on a men’s height net
Reverse Coed (RCO) – 3 Women, 3 Men alternating rotation no front row men’s attack or block, men’s back row attack allowed, played on women’s height net
Combo – Half the matches are played Coed and the other half is played Reverse Coed as stated above

Tournaments are published as a combination of one of the above levels with one of the above formats.

How do ratings work?

In MSVBA we give each player a rating based on skill level. The MSVBA Ratings Committee will asses your play in categories such as passing, hitting, setting, defense, serving, and blocking. After a majority agreement by the committee your rating is decided. Each letter rating equates to a point value, which are used to determine whether a certain combination of players on a team can “fit” into a certain level tournament.

B+ 7 Points
B 6 Points
B- 5 Points
C+ 4 Points
C 3 Points

EXAMPLE: A team entering a C+ Level Tournament might consist of players with these ratings:

B 6 Points
B- 5 Points
B- 5 Points
C+ 4 Points
C+ 4 Points
C 3 Points

The grand total for this team = 27, which means that this team is “maxed out” on points for this tournament. Teams are not required to max out their points, and in some instances, strategy might compel a captain to carry fewer points on their team on purpose.

What if I don’t have a rating?

If you do not have an active MSVBA or Yankee rating your team captain is responsible for assigning a best guess rating prior to entering the team into a tournament. Ratings Committee members will assess your play throughout the tournament and determine whether or not the rating is appropriate. A spot rating may be assigned the day of the tournament for players without an active rating.

If I don’t have a team how can I get picked up for a tournament?

How do I register a team for a tournament?

Registration is located within the tournament forum. There are two ways to register: PayPal or Check.

Why is my team on the wait list?

Tournaments have a limited number of teams that can be allowed to play in order to keep the play within certain time limits. If more teams register then there is room for the teams are added to the wait list. In the event that a team is not able to play, teams on the wait list will be offered the open spot.

What is the cancellation policy?

You May Cancel up to 10 days before the tournament for a full refund. You will get a full refund after the 10th day only if the tournament is full and I can replace your team. Weather Cancellation Policy: Tournament Cancellation due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances will be decided by 6:30 am on the day of the tournament. If a tournament has been cancelled due to weather a full refund will be issued.

If you have any other questions please post a reply to this topic and we will work it into FAQ’s.
